  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tsp lemon juice)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter.
  2. Stir in the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and buttermilk, whisking until combined.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat, stirring continuously.
  4. Add the baking soda and salt, and stir well. The mixture will bubble up.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste.
  6. Let the syrup cool slightly before serving. It will thicken as it cools.
  7. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Reheat before serving if needed.
